Dortmund breezed  (SEE VIDEO OF BREEZE)  seven furlongs in 1:25 4/5 for trainer Bob Baffert at Santa Anita Sunday morning in what many thought would be his final serious preparation for the Jan. 9 San Pasqual in which he would have faced California Chrome. Baffert decided that Dortmund is not quite ready and has delayed his next start.

“I missed a little time with him after that second quarter crack and he didn’t really finish the way I like to see him finish,” Baffert said after watching Dortmund work Sunday. “I wanted to see him finish up a little better than he did.

The ultimate goal for Dortmund is the March 12 Santa Anita Handicap, while California Chrome is scheduled to run in the Dubai World Cup on March 26.  Now, a meeting between the two chestnut colts may have to be postponed until after Chrome returns stateside.

  • NAMING CONTEST UPDATE
    11/23/2015

We have alerted the over all WINNER and the WINNERS and RUNNER UPS in the contests for individual foal names. We are asking permission to publish their names on the website. As soon as that is granted, we will post the results.

We have had several instances of names which were very popular, but were already taken or inelligible for other reasons. One example which actually got the highest number of overall votes was Save Your Breath. This name was taken in 2013 by a Lousiana Bred gelding. Other good names such as Pyrotechnics, Air Quality and Air Force On(n)e were also taken.

We thank everyone for participating and coming up with such wonderful names.

"She ran the way we expected. I told [jockey] Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] to just break from there running and if someone goes crazy just let the other horse go,” explained winning trainer Rudy Rodriguez. “She got a nice comfortable lead and then she switched leads and took it home. [Cutting back to six furlongs] was the best thing we did. I still think she can stretch out. Hopefully next year she can stretch out to a mile. The main thing is we have to keep her sound and healthy." Ortiz, who captured his 1,000th mainland U.S. victory in the fifth race and who won four races on Aqueduct’s Sunday card, added, “I rode her before and after talking to Rudy I think we figured her out now. Before we thought she liked to run a little relaxed, but today we let her go and she showed us what she's got. She fights, and she has a lot of potential.”
